New horror story for Halloween! WHAT THE CAT BROUGHT BACK

Art, News from Pixelvania Publishing, Writing

What the Cat Brought Back (Cover). A terrified cat looks on at something we can't see; grungy text appears over him. A red rip in the image contains the title.

“Magnum dropped something else off. Feels bad in your hands.”

Leaves. Dish sponges. Shoelaces.

Katheryn Crenshaw is used to her cat bringing her odd gifts.

Then he brings home an object that terrifies her.

It won’t be the last.

Novelette: 10,900 words. PG-13.

A disquieting tale starring two women. More disturbing than gory, with many of the scares happening in broad daylight…

And in a complete mood swing from the last release, we have What the Cat Brought Back. It’s a novelette (think: longer short story) perfect for Halloween reading.

Writing this, I was surprised by the tender friendship between the two women, Katheryn and Mallory. I mean, it’s still a horror story, but there’s some light in the bleakness.

You can…

And please remember, reviews are always welcome!

Writing

Happy to announce that my latest novelette, WHAT THE CAT BROUGHT BACK, is finished and ready to be sent off to my proofreaders!

What’s it about? Well, you know those hoarder cats who bring their owners back random “treasures” they’ve stolen? In What the Cat Brought Back, a woman’s pet cat begins bringing her disturbing, otherworldly objects.

And that’s just the start…

It’s disturbing, atmospheric, and going to be released in time for Halloween reading! More news will be posted here as things proceed. And, as always, you can sign up for my free writing newsletter to be the first to know when it’s released!

A quote on tense, plus horror fiction news!

Writing

“Books let you know what tense they want to be written in.” — David Mitchell, from Make it now: the rise of the present tense in fiction

As a writer working on a fantasy story (the greatest Nosferatu love story of all time) that for some reason is first-person, present tense, I found that quote to be hugely reassuring.

In other news, I am preparing a new horror novelette to go out to a proofreader. If you’ve ever had a cat bring you gifts, you will probably like it.
