In 2013, our local LDS church congregation asked my Army veteran then-boyfriend (now husband!) and me to help our ward with emergency preparedness.

Most LDS church congregations are “family wards”, with a solid base of established families living in homes. But in a Young Single Adult (YSA) ward, the congregation primarily consists of college-aged folks living in apartments with tight budgets, ready to move at the drop of a hat.

That meant that the typical church Emergency Preparedness recommendations of building up a year’s worth of food storage wasn’t going to be a good fit. At least, not at this point in their lives. So instead, we focused on helping our members develop their own 72-hour car kits in a fun, entertaining, and brief manner.
